European Social Funding has been secured to deliver a programme of support for young people and families in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The investment is part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Programme.

The Family and Community Essential Skills project which is being delivered by CSW Group, will enhance equal access to lifelong learning for those aged 16 and over in non-formal or informal settings.  The support will help to enhance knowledge and skills and will promote flexible learning pathways.

The project focus will be on delivery of targeted and tailored approaches that engage with, and build skills and confidence of individuals that adds value to family learning through development of community learning champions.

Participants on the project should expect to achieve raised qualification and skills levels, in particular basic skills.  Other project outcomes will also include higher levels of self-esteem which raise aspirations and, the removal of barriers to learning, e.g. transport, childcare, accessibility.

Julian German, Cornwall Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy said, “Families are at the heart of our communities and investing in support to help develop the skills needed to enjoy a prosperous life is vitally important.  I believe if we can help people to achieve foundation skills, the additional benefits to them and their communities will be numerous.”

Paul Hobson, Chief Executive of CSW added, ‘This funding will enable families and young people across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to have greater access to a wide range of tailor made programmes and support. With learning and development at the core of this project we are delighted that it complements the work we have championed for over twenty years.’
