The project will drill and test the first 4,500m deep demonstration well for a geothermal energy system, at the Eden Project (Eden) in mid-Cornwall, followed by one year of heat production to demonstrate greenhouse gas (GHG) savings. It will build on existing research and knowledge of the deep geothermal energy resource in Cornwall by providing greater understanding of the geology at depth, enabling potential resources in the region to become characterised as reserves. The project will be delivered by a team with specialist knowledge and expertise in the development of this type of geothermal system. Once completed, the project will contribute to the initiatives to create a thriving renewable energy industry sector for the county and for the UK. It is envisaged the project will enable the subsequent development of a deep geothermal heat and power plant at Eden, comprising two 4,500m wells and a Combined Heat and Power plant.
