Who Dares Works is a partnership project, led by Active Plus, working to support individuals in West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to reconnect with education, training and employment.
At the heart of the project is the Active Plus course. This is often the first step for participants joining the project. Delivered by military veterans from Active Plus, the course has been designed to build confidence, motivation and self-belief while completing activities in a small group of people.
The project utilises the expertise of other Community Interest Companies across the county to offer a range of specialist support and work-related activities. Participants on the project can undertake a Pathway to Care, a 2-week Construction course, as well as housing support, benefit and money advice and counselling. We have a team of people delivering Work Ready provision, supporting with CV creation, job searching and preparing for interviews. Participants will also have access to health and wellbeing support, such as with our Health and Wellbeing Practitioner, through sport and Community Clubs.
Each participant will be assigned a mentor who will support them throughout their journey. The mentor will work with the participant to understand their goals and help them towards that by tapping into the available provision.
Active Plus use the skills, experience and expertise of injured military veterans to deliver unique programme that build confidence, communication, motivation and self-belief, unlocking and nurturing the potential of participants regardless of their background and circumstance.
“Friendly and always encouraging and motivating, they are wonderful at helping people with low confidence like myself feel like I can do and achieve anything I want to!”
The project is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the European Social Fund as part of the national Building Better Opportunities Programme. The project has already supported over 850 people and has secured a further £3.3 million to support a further 832 individuals until December 2021.
To be eligible for the project, participants must be 18 or over, unemployed or economically inactive and have the right to work in the UK. They must be living in West Cornwall/Isles of Scilly.
Participants can self-refer onto the project, or can be referred by a number of other sources. Sources include: social landlords; adult social care, community organisations, NHS practitioners, Job Centres, project partners and through the work of our participant advocates.
