Management training renovates careers
Ambitious individuals looking to kick-start their careers have been helped to achieve their goal through the delivery of free skill boosting sessions delivered by a leading local College.
Delivered by Truro and Penwith College as part of the ESF Widening Participation through Skills Project, the Higher Level Skills Days provided learners with study skills to boost their confidence and academic knowledge before a potential return to education.
Warehouse Manager Ross Keast attended a Higher Level Skills Day to help get up to 50% worth of funding to study a short Level 3 qualification or a University Level short course through the Higher Level Skills project.
He said: “The day was pretty good and acted as an eye-opener! Back at university, I always struggled trying to figure out what the essay question was asking and how to structure my response. The session has helped me to break down the question and filter different ideas to approach it from a better angle.”
Having already completed an ILM Level 3 qualification, his employer, WISKA UK Ltd, then encouraged Ross to complete the ILM Level 3 Award in Service Improvement (based on lean principles) to support his role in the warehouse.
Ross became eager to re-train and boost his skills when the workforce expanded and lead to his promotion, quadrupling a team of three to twelve employees working under his leadership.
With the original intention of working within the marketing industry, Ross completed a course in education and media studies at University. However, his experience working in the warehouse made him realise that the position as a Warehouse Manager suited his skillset better so decided to improve his leadership and management skills.
For anyone considering re-training in a different field, Ross says: “Stay open minded; Higher Level Skills Days are about learning new things. Even if you only take away one or two new skills, they will still be helpful in your study and work life.”
ESF Project Coordinator Madeline Richardson was very pleased with the response from the two days and is happy that attendees have benefitted from the sessions.
She said: “It’s fantastic when the feedback tells us that these Higher Level Skills Days are a confidence boost for those wishing to get back into education. They are also great for breaking down barriers for those who are hoping to study at a higher level for the first time.”
