Superfast 2 will extend access to superfast (30+Mbps) and ultrafast (100+Mbps) broadband in the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly (C&IoS) LEP area. The project will start in March 2017 and run for three years until February 2020.

The project will keep C&IoS at the forefront of the digital agenda, driving increased connectivity, overcoming peripherality from national and international markets and significantly contributing to the targets of the EU’s Digital Agenda for Europe.

The project brings together the following organisations:

  • Cornwall Council as applicant, providing strategic direction and match funding
  • Cornwall Development Company (CDC), as delivery partner, undertaking day to day management of the project
  • Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), within the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS)

After the achievements of the 2010-2015 Convergence-funded Superfast Cornwall programme, and the following Superfast Extension Project, there will still remain around 40,000 premises (including approx. 7,000 businesses) that are unable to access 30+Mbps broadband speeds. This project represents a new phase of investment to extend availability of superfast and ultrafast broadband networks to as many of these businesses as possible. The focus will be on businesses in areas of slower speeds, provided value for money considerations are met. Recognising the increasing costs of extending superfast broadband networks into rural areas, and the ambition to reach as many additional businesses as possible.

Whilst the project is focussed on providing Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with access to 30+Mbps broadband, the wider population will also benefit when the broadband infrastructure in an area is upgraded.  Based on initial estimations, the total number of premises to be provided with access to 30+Mbps broadband is estimated to include approximately 1,200 businesses.
